In contemporary globalized societies, phenomena such as economic crises, natural catastrophes, and armed conflicts have become pervasive, exacerbating the unpredictability of the future and the perception of a widespread uncertainty. Such uncertainty is likely to hold an enormous influence on family formation and life courses, for this reason it has emerged as a topic of critical concern in social research. Economic uncertainty, in particular, is deemed to delay young people from leaving their parents’ home, negatively affecting union formation processes and childbearing prospects. However, recent global events underscore that the economy is not the sole force that is able to shape our vision of the future and the possible perception of uncertainty. However, recent global events underscore that the economy is not the sole force that is able to shape our vision of the future and the related perception of uncertainty.
Hence, this project aims to explore the influence of emerging forms of uncertainty— i.e., the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and recent armed conflicts —on family life courses —i.e. fertility, union formation and dissolution—. Furthermore, it develops a specific focus on how media shape imaginaries about the future and the perception of uncertainty.
