Age-It – Ageing Well in an Ageing Society

Description

The Age-It project aims to transform Italy into an international scientific hub for research on ageing, an "empirical laboratory" that represents the reference standard in the socio-economic, biomedical and technological fields to build an inclusive society for all ages.

Through a holistic, transdisciplinary, and problem-solving approach, Age-It overcomes the fragmentation of different perspectives on ageing research, involving a critical mass of partners, including research institutions, education and training, medical and care centers, civil society associations, businesses, and industries.

Age-It is based on three cross-cutting theoretical principles to address ageing, which require a holistic, interdisciplinary and problem-solving approach. Age-It recognises the dynamic nature of ageing by adopting a life-course-based approach at the individual, family, and societal levels. In particular, three principles of life course theory form the basis of this holistic approach:

  • Cumulative experiences: Individuals' past experiences and exposures influence their current condition in different areas of life;
  • Linked lives: events in one area of life can affect all the others;
  • Period and context: The geographical context and historical period in which people live influence the probabilities, times, and sequences with which the main stages of the life course are experienced.

Age-it addresses three levels of analysis: micro (individuals), meso (families, care and assistance institutions, voluntary associations, and businesses), and macro (societies, institutions). All three levels of analysis, individually and in their interactions, are fundamental to address the challenges of ageing in contemporary societies.
